It always was.If you watched “ The Carol Burnett Show,” you are familiar with how Tim Conway would have Harvey Korman laughing during their scenes. This was Tim and Harvey's show - and Carol's. DuArt's manic mimicry was generally entertaining, but some of it fell short. The 90-minute show also featured several solo bits by comic impersonator Louise DuArt, whose virtuosic range of voices spanned Joan Rivers, Jean Stapleton, Mae West, Barbara Walters, Barbra Streisand, George Burns, Gracie Allen, Fran Drescher, Carol Burnett (briefly), Dr. (Conway: ''I've eaten so much roughage, I'm startin' to pass wicker furniture. Much of this had a surprising (but not shocking - Korman and Conway are never shocking) emphasis on sex and scatology, some of which involved Viagra and the alimentary canal.

In this late-90s incarnation, Korman walked in with a toothache Conway, reading from a thick wedge of a manual called ''Dentistry for Dummies,'' accidentally injects the aforementioned local anesthetic into his hand, his thigh, his head and his buttocks.Ĭonway and Korman each had turns at solo stand-up, which both comics used to spoof their wives, diets, physicians and senior citizenship. The airline sketch, in which Conway reprised Duh-wayne, his shuffling, electric-haired nebbish from the Burnett show, was the evening's best showcase of the pair's trademark humor, although an inspired duet in which Korman recited a Lou Gehrig-like farewell speech while Conway mimicked big-arena echoes through a watering can on his head was a close second. It was funny because it wasn't perfect - because Korman's whacks at improvisation fell flat. The beauty of such loopy quip-swapping is was, 20 years ago and on Monday night - its looseness, its laziness, its ability to be funny without being perfect. ''What makes it so delightful,'' he oozed back, ''is there's no ad libs in it.'' (Korman, later on: ''What do you think this is, some kind of comedy routine?'' Conway: ''Not on that side of the table.'') ''Tell me about the deli delight what makes it so delightful?'' Korman improvised at one point, trying hard to nudge Conway into a goof on airline food. Anyone hoping for the same Monday night probably left disappointed, although Korman desperately attempted to pull the reverse stunt on Conway it didn't work. Their sketches together were legendary thanks in part to Conway's unerring tendency to reduce Korman to helpless giggles. (They'll perform again tonight.)Ĭonway and Korman are masters of egging each other on Conway with his deadpan, dead-on physical humor, Korman with his beguiling ability to make a complete and utter nerd of himself. They don't quite look the same much effort and many punch lines were spent emphasizing the deleterious effects of age but the breezy ease of their chemistry together was as welcome as it was unchanged.

For anyone who has spent any time with ''The Carol Burnett Show,'' watching Korman and Conway noodle about onstage was a bit like swallowing a Day-Glo happy pill and waking up in a heavy-piled TV den, circa 1973.
